Before you sign up: how your compensation is paid
Research compensation is treated as "other income" under Korean tax law, and we are legally required to withhold tax when we pay you. What matters is your tax residency in Korea — not your nationality.
✅ You receive the full announced amount if you are a Korean tax resident.
You generally qualify if you have stayed, or will stay, in Korea for 183 days or more during the calendar year (Jan 1 – Dec 31). Days do not need to be consecutive. In practice this usually applies to degree-seeking students and other long-term residents holding an Alien Registration Card (ARC).
→ Payments of KRW 50,000 or less are not subject to withholding, so you receive 100% of the stated amount, exactly as Korean participants do.
⚠️ If you do not meet the 183-day threshold (for example, a one-semester exchange student), Korean law requires withholding of up to 22% of the payment. The amount deposited will be reduced accordingly.
Tax treaty: If your home country has a tax treaty with Korea, a reduced rate may apply. You may submit a Certificate of Residence issued by your home country's tax authority.
We will only ask for the documents needed to confirm this (ARC number, date of entry, expected period of stay) when you request a payout — not at sign-up.
